Abstract: The article assesses the quality of life of the rural population of Russia. In recent years, some indicators of the state of social services in rural areas (housing, drinking water, gasification) have somewhat improved, but the problem is far from being solved. For example, in 2012 the number of public pre-school educational institutions amounted to only 78.4‰ of the 2000 level, the number of public educational institutions - to 60.1‰ etc. Reducing the number of social infrastructure has led to a decrease in their availability. It is shown that among poor households in rural areas increases the number of families of 5 or more people, as well as large families. Budget federal targeted programs aimed at reviving the Russian village is not sufficient for solving the problems in them. It is noted that for the sustain able development of rural areas and providing a decent standard of living of the rural population it’s necessary to create a functioning local government institution.
